Favorite analogies

Having talked about stories and analogies many times as one of the most effective ways to get your audience engaged and understanding your topic, I thought I would dredge up some of my favorite Speak Schmeak analogies.

The taste of flavor

Play for the people

Public speaking touchdown

Concentrating or worrying?

Are you lifting too much weight?

Build your public speaking immunity

Are you speaking your audience's language?

Doing the bare minimum

Big brown eyes

Which waiter are you?

Falling in love with the real you

What's on your cheese plate?

As you can see, I have a predilection for sports and food analogies. What are some favorite analogies you use when speaking on your topic?

  1. Lisa: my favorite source of analogies, like your use of food and sports, come from experiences that I'm reasonable sure that the audience can share with me. That's why I use things like raising kids (everyone had parents), cars (fixing, driving, etc.), and houses / apartments (acquiring, moving, maintaining, decorating, etc.).

  2. When I talk (and write) about choosing the best publishing option for a book, I compare it to taking a trip. If you don't know where you're going, how can you figure out the best way to get there?
